Hi folks, how’re you doing? I hope you’re staying safe. My name is Stephen Brown and I’m standing in the MU General Secretary election that’s taking place in 2022. I want to talk to you about some of my key commitments, should I be successful in being elected to the post of General Secretary, and I also want to talk a little bit about the kind of relationship that I believe the General Secretary should have with our members.
First of all though, it’s very easy to talk about me, myself, I, what I’ve done, what I’m gonna do in a campaign like this, and that’s not the thrust of what I want to do. This is about the we, not the me, it’s about making your issues, my issues. How am I gonna do that? Well, some of my key commitments cover things like re-democratising the union, they talk about empowering our members, about looking at the financial resilience of the union and ensuring that our subs are as affordable as is possible.
When it comes to the relationship that the General Secretary has with the membership I believe that should be as close as possible. I want my tenure as General Secretary, if I’m successful, to be about listening to the members, responding to that and building campaigns around that.
That’s an organising approach to being a trade union. Finally, in terms of staying in touch with the members, I believe that the salary of the General Secretary should not be so out of touch, it’s remote from the financial realities and working lives of our members. That’s it for now, I look forward to meeting you in person at some point in the future thank you.
