Video Transcript – Equality

Hi folks, Stephen Brown here, I’m standing in the MU General Secretary election taking place in 2022. I’m doing a series of informal videos, I guess to explain my commitments to you, the members, should I be successful in being elected to General Secretary. In this video I want to talk about how we organise and how we’re structured as a union. I think there are musicians that we’ve struggled to reach historically and I want to put that right. For instance, but not necessarily limited to, musicians who are Black, Asian, young musicians, LGBTQ+ musicians. For me, it’s important if we’re serious about equality, diversity and inclusion, that we empower such members, and the only way we can empower them is by changing the rules and changing the way that we do things.

Now I understand that during a General Secretary election it’s probably not the most exciting topic to be talking about changing the rules, but if we’re serious about equality, diversity and inclusion, that is exactly what we are going to have to do. We are going to have to empower members to be able to set up self-organised groups and committees to deal with the issues that those members want to deal with and want to campaign on, and receive the support and resources from the union to make those campaigns successful. I’m happy to talk with any member in greater detail about this but if you check out my website – www.stephenbrown4gs.uk you’ll find more information about my campaign and what it is I aim to do should I be successful in being elected to MU General Secretary.

Thanks for listening.
